She lay in bed motionless. She had awakened a few minutes earlier, langourous, her body thick with sleep. Her first thoughts had been about her husband, how he had just left for two days and she didn’t remember kissing him good-bye, although she knew she must have. Certainly, she must have. There were certain conventions to adhere to. If even they began to deteriorate. The thought annoyed her. It hadn’t gone this far without keeping to some sort of routine. Or had he just crept out in the early morning, leaving her deep in her dreams about… She had dreamt [read more...]
It had been many months since the enforce split up of Sandy and Jim. True they had seen each other for a few moments here and there and even shared lunch, such as it was, alone together at a nearby picnic table. But there was always something lurking in the background. Sandy was constantly concerned about being seen by the wrong people and Jim was afraid that Sandy would eventually have her fill of him. Their “affair” (a poor descriptive word with unfortunate connotations as the relationship they had could only be portrayed in words of beauty) was an unequal [read more...]
“Damn, it’s cold in here!” I muttered to myself as I seated myself at the lab bench. Cold indeed, at only four degrees Celsius, barely a frosty breath away from freezing temperature. Cold enough to keep proteins and nucleic acids from denaturing, cold enough to keep antibodies in their active form.
And cold enough to make me fervently wish for something to keep me warm.
It was a Saturday, and almost midnight at that, and it was just as much my stagnating social life which brought me here as it was the necessity of processing my latest experiment. Ever since my [read more...]
She was small, and somehow childlike even though her eyes were wise and her gait determined. A casual observer would notice the grace in her step, and admire the resoluteness in the pose of her head; she seemed to be searching for something, but gave the impression its find would be unexpected. Like a sleepwalker, perhaps, or just a solemn little girl playing hide-and- seek with an imaginary friend.
Soft, shimmering folds of cloth fell in a swirl from her almost too-high Imperial neckline. She was long-limbed but short-waisted and favored this style for its complementary treatment of this imperfection. [read more...]
I was happy, a little excited even, to provide a night of lodging to Rod, the fellow from the home office, upstate. We had been working together on the new facility design for months.
He was gorgeous and I enjoyed the few opportunities I had to be with him outside of the office — lunches and on one occasion a late night cocktail at my apartment.
Not wanting to put him off or give him the wrong idea, I offered to sleep on my couch. Rod laughed looking at the loveseat that I called a couch. Not necessary, he said. [read more...]
Morning found us still cuddled in the main room on the blanket, the fire still giving off a faint warm glow. The sun was filtering in through the large glass covered walls, lighting the room cheerfully. I awakened first, and did my best not to wake her as I moved back. I looked down at her, curled up, one arm over her breasts, the other under her head and pillow. She looked like an innocent angel, smiling in her sleep. I wrapped my still warm side of the blanket around her as I went off to make some coffee. I [read more...]
It was nearly midnight as I plodded through the woods
next to the old paper mill off of Highway 59. I had sneaked
out of my house through the window in my room just an hour
before. This is the place where I always went to calm myself
and think.
I was walking down the path that my feet had eventually
worn into the foliage on the ground. I could smell the pine
as if that smell were intended just for me. All that my eye
could see in all directions was the huge pine trees
generously spaced throughout the [read more...]
feel her eyes upon me; I sense the hold I have on her, but I can’t help
but wonder why. She’s watching me -every movement- as I dance for her.
Yes..I’m dancing only for her. This gives me great satisfaction —
dancing for her. I would say I feel quite smug, but I couldn’t explain
this feeling very well. So, I simply dance…my body caught up in the
passion of the music.
The song ends; I look up at her, finally. Our eyes lock…each of us
unwavering in this game. I can feel the temperature of my body raise
significantly, and [read more...]
Look, I know I’m not supposed to pick up hitchers.
It’s not smart for me, and it’s not smart for the hiker.
But it was a rainy afternoon, and the guy up the road looked
really dejected. He was somewhat small anyway, and his
shoulders slumped over as he slogged through the mud. All
alone in the half-dark like that, he reminded me of my cat
when I had rescued him as a stray from a sudden downpour.
The kid had a yellow poncho on and wasn’t carrying any bag
or even a gas can. I supposed he was just walking some
short distance, and I [read more...]
The long drive home from visiting my parents over the holidays gave
me too much time to think and feel. As usual my feelings were sad over the
situation between us. We live together so well as roommates, except for the
fact that I love you and you don’t feel the same about me. At our best times
together I feel such a connection, a bond, a wonderful flow of energy
between us. That you haven’t felt it, from my perspective, is as if you hung
one of your arms at your side and said it didn’t exist. Intellectually your
position [read more...]
